Toby before treatment with sore eyes
Toby is a sweet young cat who was adopted last year. He was healthy other than having mucus dripping from his eyes and nose plus lots of mucky sneezing. Dr. Kathleen diagnosed him as having chronic Herpes which is very common problem in young cats. Herpes in cats, unlike humans, affect the upper respiratory system, and eyes. They sneeze and snot continuously. Because it is a virus, antibiotics don’t help long-term because antibiotics only affect the secondary bacteria. However, there are helpful treatments which Toby received. He was given Lyzine which is a natural amino acid. It interferes with the Herpes replication and can stop the outbreak. However, just likes for humans, once a cat has Herpes, he will always carry it. The trick is to control the outbreaks so there is no permanent damage to the nasal passages or eyes. Toby improved with the Lyzine treatment but he needed more help, so Dr Kathleen prescribed a drug called Famciclovir. It is a human drug used to treat Shingles and Herpes, but it also works well in cats. Toby responded very well and has no more eye and respiratory problems.
